PREVENT CHILDHOOD CANCER! Donate any amount - our goal is $200+

First of all, thanks to those who have already donated.  This is a great cause, and it means a lot to me personally.

safe_imagephpThe MACC fund is Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, and we support research to prevent childhood cancer and blood disorders.  MACC fund donations have “helped yield significant advances in overall cure rates to 80% with some as high as 90% with previously deadly cancers.”

We, the Oak Creek Pedal Jockeys will be riding the Trek 100 bicycle tour on June 6th, and we would appreciate your support in helping us raise awareness and funds for this GREAT cause.

PLEASE DONATE ANY AMOUNT to help eliminate the devastating force of these diseases.  Together we can BE PART OF HISTORY and share our great fortune with those who need it simply to take the next breath.

Lose At Least 2% Body Fat in 2 Hours

How? Lift weights! But doesn’t lifting weights make you gain weight? Not necessarily.

In just two 1-hour workouts, I dropped from 12% to 10% body fat. Not only is this a milestone for me, never having hit the 10% mark before, but I’m certain you can get these results AND MORE in just two hours. (The closer you get to zero, the harder it is to make big gains - the higher your % is now, the more you’ll lose in two hours!)

The two basic principles at work here are that (1) muscles need energy (sugars, carbs, and fat) to do work and recover, and (2) when you do intense exercise, your metabolism is boosted for hours after you’re done. Yes, you can burn calories by doing long periods of less-intense exercise, but many people will burn more fat doing intense weight workouts with the RIGHT exercises.

What are the right exercises?
Exercises using your biggest muscles - legs & glutes
Exercises using a combination of muscles i.e. multi-joint exercises

BUT THERE’S ANOTHER SECRET. The way in which you lift the weights is VITAL for keeping your workout SHORT and INTENSE. Here it is: Use a 5/5 cadence. What? 5 long, slow seconds up, 5 long, slow seconds down. Count and breathe. Take a look at lifestyle designer Tim Ferriss’ results using the same techniques and a boatload of supplements.

My two 1-hour workouts this week…

Sunday - 60min:

Legs
Leg extension - 20×50lbs (BIG MUSCLES)
Calf extension - 20×90lbs, 5×130lbs

Back/Arms
Assisted pull-ups - 8×14* (MULTI-JOINT)

Chest/Arms
Assisted dips - 10×12* (MULTI-JOINT)

Chest
Dual axis chest press - 10×30lbs (MULTI-JOINT)

Abs
Machine ab cruch - 12×70lbs

Wednesday - 60 min:

Chest/Arms
Assisted dips - 10×12* (MULTI-JOINT)

Legs
Machine Press - 12×110lbs (BIG MUSCLES)

Back/Arms
Assisted pull-ups - 6×13* (MULTI-JOINT)

Shoulders
Overhead press - 8×12lbs (MULTI-JOINT)

Abs
Machine ab cruch - 12×70lbs

As you can see, with the 5/5 cadence, you don’t need a lot of weight. Concentrate on perfect technique and ‘controlling’ the weight all the way up, and all the way down.

Why Workout in the Morning?

I’m not a morning person.  Never have been.  Probably never will be.

1.  Same Workout, Burn More Calories

When you workout, your heart rate and metabolism increase to supply your body with the energy required for the increased activity.  No matter when you workout, your body’s natural tendency is to keep your heart rate a little higher, and continue that higher rate of metabolism for hours after you’re done working out to facilitate repairing strained muscles and deliver nutrients for growth and recovery.

Experts recommend working out too close  to going to sleep because your increased functions will keep you from falling asleep.  If you workout in the morning, this can work to your advantage rather than hindering healthy sleep.

When you workout in the morning, your increased heart rate and metabolism continue throughout the day, gobbling up nutrients and energy from the food you eat AND YOUR BODY.  Since your body stores energy as FAT, working out in the morning causes you to burn fat all day long.  Same workout, burn fat all day long.

2.  Reset Emotionally

I believe it was Bill Philips, of Body for Life, who said that raising your heart rate is the number one way to reset your emotions.  When you wake up, your body has the highest concentration of cortisol, the stress hormone, than any other time during the day.  Exercising in the morning helps you clear out and buffer this cortisol, which helps you start the day relaxed and focused.  Working out in the morning also physically ‘warms you up’ to further ‘chill you out’.  Ironic, eh?

3.  Set the Context for an Exceptional Day

This has never happened to me, but one time this guy I know woke up with only 15 minutes to get ready before heading to work.  He rushed to the shower, threw on the first shirt he could find, and blasted out the door in a blur of chaos.  Like I said, I would never do something like this, because I know it would throw my whole day into a downward spiral.

Working out in the morning means you make it a priority to get to bed a few minutes early, and wake up a few minutes early.  When you take the time to take care of your body, your heart, lungs, muscles, bones, and chemicals/hormones, you build a healthy foundation and set the tone for a great day.

If you workout in the morning, by the time you hit lunch time, in the back of your mind you’ll see your muscles and organs thirsting for vitamins and protein.  Think you’ll grab a greasy hamburger and fries?  No way.  You’ve set the context for a healthy lunch, a healthy dinner, and so on.  Your healthy day builds on your healthy foundation - your morning workout.
